• Fantasy ... in progress.

There are plenty of complete fantasy series out there, sure. But no, that's too easy for you, isn't it? You want something incomplete; a series that can re-evoke that feverish anticipation of the seventh Harry Potter, don't you? Of course you do.

Let's go back to the Napoleonic era, with one small change ... dragons. Yes, not only do dragons exist, but they're factored into the war. As if ships and trench wars weren't enough, now we're going to factor in the aerial corps! This is turning out to be an imaginative series; a fun diversion from the stock fantasy so many other authors churn out. It's enjoyable reimaging history with some dragons thrown in. This series is a very easy read, but enjoyable nonetheless. Temeraire book #1: His Majesty's Dragon. Temeraire book #2: Throne of Jade. Temeraire book #3: Black Powder War. Temeraire book #4: Empire of Ivory. Temeraire book #5: Victory of Eagles (forthcoming).

After reading his first book George R.R. Martin was catapulted to the top of my favorite fantasy authors. Though, as a die-hard Lord of the Rings fan, it pains me to admit it ... I think he might even be better than Tolkien. This is high fantasy if ever there was and I cannot recommend this series enough. If you like fantasy even a little, this is the book to start with. A Song of Ice and Fire #1: A Game of Thrones. A Song of Ice and Fire #2: A Clash of Kings. A Song of Ice and Fire #3: A Storm of Swords. A Song of Ice and Fire #4: A Feast for Crows A Song of Ice and Fire #5: A Dance with Dragons (forthcoming).

Fresh and edgy, Scott Lynch has some wonderfully colorful characters and a thriving environment. Like George R.R. Martin he's not afraid to kill characters or to really push them through the grind, resulting in characters that seem more well rounded and human than most heroes you find in a fantasy novel. Scott Lynch is gritty and always wonderful; I'm eagerly anticipating the rest of this series. Gentleman Bastar d* Sequence #1: The Lies of Locke Lamora. Gentleman Bastar d* Sequence #2: Red Seas Under Red Skies. Gentleman Bastar d* Sequence #3: The Republic of Thieves (forthcoming). *Chapters doesn't like this word and keeps trying to filter it out, but it is really what the series is called.

Vampires, wizards, guys with swords sticking the pointy end in eachother, and gods who giggle as their champions are murdered - what more can you ask for? One of my favorite elements of fantasy, one that is sadly rarely touched upon, is that of gods interacting with mortals. Fortunately for me, Tom Lloyd has plenty of that. The Stormcaller is a wonderful novel, and a fresh piece of fantasy for anyone suffering under the weight of two many elves and dwarves. Twilight Reign #1: The Stormcaller. Twilight Reign #2: The Twilight Herald. Twilight Reign #3: The Grave Thief (forthcoming).

      The Eye of the World

Robert Jordan , Mass Market Paperbound

It's a little tongue in cheek but I just had to include it anyway. With one book left to publish, Robert Jordan has of course passed away, so it's dubious as to exactly when we'll finally be able to lay this wonderful but ancient series to rest. Wheel of Time (prequel): A New Spring. Wheel of Time #1: The Eye of the World. Wheel of Time #2: The Great Hunt. Wheel of Time #3: The Dragon Reborn. Wheel of Time #4: The Shadow Rising. Wheel of Time #5: The Fires of Heaven. Wheel of Time #6: Lord of Chaos. Wheel of Time #7: A Crown of Swords. Wheel of Time #8: The Path of Daggers. Wheel of Time #9: Winter's Heart. Wheel of Time #10: Crossroads of Twilight. Wheel of Time #11: Knife of Dreams. Wheel of Time #12: A Memory of Light (forthcoming).

You should try Steven Erikson - Gardens of the Moon and Terry Goodkind - Wizards First Rule. If you like Robert Jordan, I GUARANTEE you'll love these two first books of amazing series.

I actually own all of Steven Erikson's books, but haven't had the chance to pick them up. As for Goodkind ... well, you can read my uber long rant about his Sword of Truth series on my page, if you so desire. I do agree that Wizard's First Rule was good, and I liked Stone of Tears ... but everything after that just goes straight downhill. All in all, it's not a series that I recommend to anyone, despite its very good beginning. Thanks for the suggestions though.
