    It's Been Awhile - August/September Reads

Posted by emerson entwistle, 2 years ago

Currently I've finished 37 out of 52 books.
I forgot to post in August, so here's all the books I read in August and September...if the title of the post didn't already give that away haha

    31. The Summer Without Men - Siri Hustvedt
Not over impressed with this book, I started reading it on a plane, and it was better at a higher altitude. It recieved quite a bit of praise in England, but it just wasn't my cup of tea, it was too scatterbrained for me.

    32. The Help - Kathryn Stockett
I really enjoyed this book, it certainly transported me. I loved it and recommend it for sure.

    33. My Horisontal Life - Chelsea Handler
Some of the stories seemed a little too over the top, even for Chelsea. I don't think I'll be looking for anymore of her books any time soon, but I had a few laughs, and there a couple of moments in this book that I won't soon forget.

    34. Something Borrowed - Emily Giffin
I really enjoyed it, I needed something light, which it was but it wasn't fluff. It made me think, which I appreciate. I liked it.

    35. Tuesdays With Morrie - Mitch Albom
What can I say about Morrie? He's so right.

    36. War Horse - Michael Morpurgo
I really enjoyed this story, the way it was told from the horses point of view? I thought it was great. I'm not in it's target audience (9-12) but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Also the movie comes out this year I think. Heartwarming.

    37. Matilda - Roald Dahl
I grew up watching this movie, and yet I had never thought to read the book. I'm glad I finally got around to it as it's a great little story. Again, I'm not in the targeted audience, but that didn't matter to me. The story sucked me in and, well it's a darn good read if you haven't already read it.

That's it for now! Happy reading :D

Guns, Germs & Steel / Madamoiselle Boelyn

Posted by CANDI, 2 years ago

Guns Germs & Steel was filled with many interesting ideas which were expanded to more words than necessary. I'm glad I read it, and it gave me a lot to think about, but I wish they'd come out with an abbreviated version.
Mademoiselle Boleyn is a wonderful historical fiction about Anne Boleyn's time at the French court of her youth, before she returned to England and became the infamous queen. An excellent read!

#26 - Wench - a very sad but a really good book about slavery and southern men and their black "mistresses". Highly recommend it if you are interested in the topic.
#27 - State of Wonder - another really good book. I enjoyed reading about the Amazon :)
#28 - Postcards from a dead girl - I really only got this on Kobo because it was 99cents at one point and thought it might be a nice light read... Can't say I enjoyed it :(

  • #13 - A great read

For #13 I read "Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. Loved it! 5/5
Can't wait for the sequel x2 which will be posts #14 and #15 in no time. A great book for any age.

#12 and the end of a series

Posted by Crista, 2 years ago

For #12 I read The Girl who kicked the hornet's nest by Stieg Larsson - 4/5. I felt this was a satisfying conclusion to a great series. I liked the first 2 books better (especially the first) but this novel brings the reader full-circle.

    Book 23 & 24 of 52

Posted by Manda, 2 years ago

A Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin ~ I like to think of this as more of a "Shuffle" with dragons. I think that was mostly because so much time had gone by since A Feast For Crows that I really had to struggle to remember some of the previous story line. I felt that there was a lot of what I like to call building blocks in this story leading up to the next installment (which I can only hope will not take another 5 years). Overall, a good, but time consuming read.

Spell Bound by Kelley Armstrong ~ The latest installment of the Women of the Otherworld series. This did not disappoint. It picked right up where Waking the Witch left of with Savannah and her loss of powers. I love this series. So many amazing charachters and a storyline that feels like it is going to really explode into something big which I expect will be the series finale that is supposed to be out next year. I actually started feeling sad halfway in this book knowing that the series was coming to an end . I look forward to the next but I think it will be bittersweet knowing it will be the finale.

I have moved on to Kiss of Midnight by Lara Adrian. The series was recommended by some friends who also love the BDB series by JR Ward and say its pretty similar. I will let you all know what I think when I am done!

    #11 - On a roll!

Mistress of Nothing by Kate Pullinger - 3/5. An ok read. Rooted for the maid, Sally, and was mostly annoyed by all the rest of the characters that seemed to let her down throughout.

The Wednesday Sisters by Meg Waite Clayton - enjoyed this book and gave it 4/5. A nice summer read motivating me to remember the importance of friendship.

    Book 9

Posted by Sue Kupka, 2 years ago

Okay, the goal is 25 books this year instead of 52, so sad I am not going to keep up with my 2 years in a row of going through a book a week.

My 9th book was the last book in the Troubleshooters series by Suzanne Brockmann - called Breaking the Rules.

I LOVED this book but it is action packed and the characters never catch a break - be prepared to take a nap after this one you will be tired - it was great.

  • SO far behind

Posted by Crista, 2 years ago

Just joined. What a cool group! Too bad I've only just discovered it and it is week 36 ... and I'm at book #9. Resolving to make best efforts to do a book a week from now until week 52.

Here is my list so far:
    1. Think of a number - John Vercon - good mystery and now has a sequel. 4/5
    2. The Room - Emma Donoghue - hands down the best book I've read in a long time. Loved it. Highly recommended. 5/5
    3. The Jewel of St Petersburg - Kate Furnivall - enjoyed this one, unexpected, and a quick page-turning romance. 4/5
    4. The Paris Wife - Paula McLean - found the wife particularly annoying; Hemmingway was a total cad. 3/5
    5. When God was a rabbit - Sarah Winman - didn't get it; didn't enjoy it. 1/5
    6. Midwives - Chris Bohjalian - old Oprah's pick that had been on the shelf a while. Glad I picked it up. 4/5
    7. We need to talk about Kevin - Lionel Shriver - disturbing - but great to stimulate a nature vs. nurture debate at bookclub. 3/5
    8. My name is memory - Ann Brashares - not quite the love story of Edward/Bella but an enjoyable read. 3/5
    9. Midwife of Venice - Roberta Rich - a suprisingly good pick - enjoyed it! 4/5

    Summer Reads

Posted by Stacey S, 2 years ago

So, I wrote a beautifully detailed post on all of my summer reads, and it deleted when I tried to publish it!! GRRR...
Since I don't want to spend another hour on this, I'm just going to give you the edited version...

    Books 24 - 34

    The Hunger Games...Suzanne Collins 5/5
    She's Come Undone...Wally Lamb 5/5
    Outlander...Diana Gabaldon 5/5
My Name is Memory...Ann Brashares 5/5
The Violets of March...Sarah Jio 4/5
The Last Summer of You and Me...Ann Brashares 4/5
    Summer Sisters...Judy Blume 4/5
    Exile...Richard North Patterson 5/5
The Summer of Skinny Dipping...Amanda Howells 3/5
    A Certain Slant of Light....Laura Whitcomb 4/5
    Beside a Burning Sea...John Shors 5/5

I will say that Beside a Burning Sea by John Shors is hands down the best novel I read all summer. If you haven't picked up one of his books, you are denying yourself, they are all such wonderful stories, and Shors is a master storyteller!
