  • New Indigo Recommends title-- watch the exclusive trailer for ROOM

Posted by Fiction Editor, 10 months ago

Longlisted for the 2010 Man Booker Prize, Emma Donoghue's latest novel is a compelling tale of five-year-old Jack and his mother, who live in a single small room. Their only contact with the outside world is through a mysterious figure known only as Old Nick. Emotionally intense, poignant yet funny, and superbly written, ROOM explores such issues as a child's perception of reality, a mother's desperate need for freedom, and the sometimes heartbreaking quest for normalcy.

We're also delighted to share this exclusive book trailer -- it does a fantastic job of introducing the book!

A good trailer for an excellent book. The book is a must read and unputdownable - the story stays with you for weeks afterwards and leaves you puzzling over whether there are other people stuggling and surviving in the same situations. Humbling and thought-provoking. Emma is to be congratulated.

Awesome book! I loved it! A compelling read! It was one of those books that you are sad to see end when you turn the last page. Jack is an unforgettable, endearing character. It is my next Staff Pick at work.

What a terrifying insight to a single mothers mental illness through the eyes of her child. There are so many possibilities of abuse here from "old Nick" who brings the groceries, takes out the trash, and the child that "sees" him sometimes in the night. Is the mother being sexually abused ? Is she kept like this because he can, and is taking care of the situation and receiving monies from her welfare check. This is a powerful book. I look foreward to others coments. Mary Surtel

I can only say that that is one of the most poignant introductions I have seen. The emotions created by the voice of Jack as he illustrates his world are almost unbearable. My heart aches for him and his innocence and for the life he must have living in the "Room". Being a parent of a 5 year old I know how I would feel inside that life. What will happen to Jack? To Ma? Will they see the outside, the grass and will they get ice cream.
WOW...I can't wait to read this book!!!!
