  • February, by Lisa Moore

I was certainly looking forward to this book, thinking that the author was taking a significant risk in starting out from the Ocean Ranger tragedy. That part -- and her exploration of its impact on St. John's -- she did quite well. Alas, I have a problem with Lisa Moore in this book and her previous ones. She loves digressions to the point that I think she is avoiding her major themes and the digressions add little to the book. Other readers (well, prize juries anyway) don't seem to find this a problem -- so I would love to see other opinions from those who liked the book. I have posted a full review at www.kevinfromcanada.wordpress.com.

    Welcome

Welcome to the 2009 Giller Prize group -- it is Canada's most-recognized fiction prize and I have borrowed a photo of Doris Giller for the logo. I think I can speak for all Canadian readers in thanking Jack Rabinovitch for creating such a wonderful recognition for his wife. Not only does her memory live on, but every Canadian book reader benefits. Heartfelt thanks, Jack, even if we don't get to go to the awards ceremony.

It has been a rather slow spring for new Canadian books that are Giller worthy -- sources say the summer and fall will see a lot more. I've included just a few references so please feel free to add your own choices.
