A new Blogger "The Medieval Mystery Book Club" .

Posted by Bret Sheppard, 15 months ago

I have just created a blogger called "The Medieval Mystery Book Club." Which will feature book review recommendations and more insight into the authors. You can check it out here; themedievalbookclub.blogspot.com/2011/02/at-beginning.html
and I hope you enjoy it.

    • This is from a series that I was recommended to before the holidays, and I truly enjoyed this book and looking forward to reading the others.

    • From The Medieval Murderers, I stumbled upon Bernard Knights, and I am currently reading "Crowner Royal." Which I am also enjoying.

    • Started to collect a lot of Michael Jecks books lately.

I just received this in my email, and I thought that it might be of interest to everyone.

The new updated list can be found at www.best100novels.com . Since we got such a good response from the original list we decided to try out a few new projects. Best 100 Authors and Best 100 Movies are now taking votes and we hope to have initial lists up some time in november. You can help us out by voting for your favorite authors and movies at www.best100movies.com and www.best100authors.com .

    Jester Leap Ins

Posted by Caitlo, 4 years ago

My first Medieval Mystery book was the Jester Leaps In. I found it quite unusual to see today's society of a mystery novel presented in a medieval time setting. It was done very successfully and this book presents intrigue in every chapter. Also good for a quick, easy read.

  • Mistress of The Art of Death by Ariana Franklin

Loved this--plan on reading The Serpent's Tale by the same author
This if for all of you lover's of historical fiction but also love a good thriller/mystery. This book has it all. Four children have been found murdered and King Henry II has decided that they need help in finding the killer of Children. He asks from the King of Sicily ,for a Master of the Art of Death--the best that he has---what he sends him is Adelia---the Mistress of the Art of Death. There are no women doctors in medieval England, only men. The mystery of who is killing the children of Cambridge, weaves in and out, surprises at every turn. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and plan on reading The Serpent's Tale, also by this author with the same character of Adelia throughout. Something for everyone in this fine tale.

Sharon Kay Penman - A Lionheart of Period

Posted by Bret Sheppard, 4 years ago

Murder and a power hungry brother, make for a fun read.

I just began reading Sharon Kay Penman's Cruel as The Grave. King Richard the Lionheart has been captured and Prince John has devious plans to take over the Throne of England. Our Sleuth Justin De Quincy has been hired by Queen Eleoner to chalk up a deal with Prince John, and in the process almost getting himself killed, plus a murder to solve. Sounds like fun. Sorry no Robin, Little John or Maid Marion in this story.

Paul Doherty - A Literary Time Machine

Posted by Bret Sheppard, 4 years ago

Paul Doherty has a number of historical fiction titles and series, including Egypt , Rome, Alexander the Great and recently tackling the Crusades with "The Templar" . However, the two series that I quite enjoy is Brother Athelstan and Hugh Corbett Mysteries. Both have a mit full of fun and odd characters that add to the sure joy of reading these books. Similar to the Ellis Peters Cadfael, where you can get to know the main character plus all of the rest of the cast as well. For example you have to have a great laugh in the Brother Athelstan series where the brother is either frustrated of agasted at how his sidekick the Coroner John Cranston can get himself into a royal stuper and at the same time be alert to what is going on. This will not be the last I am sure we will hear of Paul Doherty, but he is certainly worth mentioning.

Cadfael - The Summer of the Danes

Posted by Bret Sheppard, 4 years ago

One of the best that I have read.

I have read many of Ellis Peters Cadfael in the past, but had neglected to read "The Summer of the Danes." I must admit, this had to be one of the best, if not the best I have read so far. Taking us to the Welsh coast and mixing in with a murder to solve, but also clash between brothers Owain Gwynedd and Cadwaladr. Cadwaladr adds a little spice by bribing a group of Irish Danes to invade Wales only to welch on the deal. This is a great read for history buff and stunning with the Welsh backdrop. Highly Recommended Cadfael - The Summer of the Danes by Mysterious Press and is available from Chapters Indigo.
