    You're all invited

Posted by Peter Edwards, 2 years ago

    Please come to the launch

I invite all of you to the launch of my book The Bandido Massacre: A True Story of Bikers, Brotherhood and Betrayal (HarperCollins) on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at Prohibition Gastro Pub on Queen St. E., a couple doors west of Broadview. Prohibition is on the site of the former Bandidos clubhouse. The Bandidos used to meet there in the mid-2000s, back when Prohibition was under different ownership. The Bandidos that meant here were the victims (and one killer) involved in the massacre of eight bikers in Shedden, outside London, Ont., four years ago. You can read more about the launch in the blog section of my website at www.thebandidomassacre.com. You can see video and hear audio of the crew on the site. Cheers, Peter Edwards

    Ian

For our July book, we have voted on Malcolm Gladwell's "The Tipping Point: How little thing can make a big difference:

The book is widely available in bookstores and the Toronto Library.

This book promises to be a read comparable to Freakonomics, and Blink.

    The book is 304 pages.

The location will be at Bloor and Bathurst in a licenced cafe and bar.

    Back Cover:
The Tipping Point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behaviour crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a small but precisely targeted push cause a fashion, trend the popularity at a new product, or a drop in the crime rate. This widely acclaimed best sellering which Malcolm Gladwell explores and brilliantly illuminates the tipping point phenomenon, is already changing the way people throughout the world think about selling products and disseminating ideas.

    Undeniably compelling terrifically rewarding
    - Claire Dedere, Seattle Times

Gladwell has a knack for rendering complex theories in clear, elegant prose, and he makes a charismatic tour guide.
    - Christopher Hawthorne, San Fransico Chroncile

As A business how to, The Tipping Point is truly superior, briming with new theories on the science of manipulation
    - Aaron Gell, Tim Out

Malcom Gladwell was a reporter for the Washington Post from 1987-1996, working first as a science writer and then as New York City Bureau Chief. Since 1996, he ahs been a staff writer for The New Yorker.

Cheers, See ya at the meetup

    Hello All

For are next book we are doing the Best Seller 'In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto" by Michael Pollan

The book is widely available and is at the library

    Enjoy the Read

    Back Cover

Food. There's plenty of it around, and we all love to eat it. So why should anyone need to defend it?

Because most of what we're consuming today is not food and how we're consuming it-in the car, in front of the TV, and increasingly alone-is not really eating. Instead of food, we're consuming "edible foodlike substances"-of them come packaged with health claims that should be our first clue they are anything but healthy. In the so-called Western diet, food has been replaced by nutrients, and common sense by confusion. The result is what Michael Pollan calls the American paradox: The more we worry about nutrition, the less healthy we seem to become.

But if read food-the sort of food our great grandmothers would recognized as food-stands in need of a defense, from on one side and nutritional science on the other. Both stand to gain much from widespread confusion about what to eat, a question that for most of human history people have been able to answer without expert help. Yet the professionalization of eating has failed to make Americans healthier. Thirty years of official nutritional advice has only made us sicker and fatter while ruining countless numbers of meals.

Pollan proposes a new (and very old) answer to the question of what we should eat that comes down to seven simple but liberation words: Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. By urging us to once again eat food, he challenges the prevailing nutrient-by-nutrient approach-what he calls nutritionism-and proposes an alternative way of eating that is informed by the traditions and ecology of real, well-grown, and unprocessed food. Our personal health, he argues, cannot be divorced from the health of the food chains of which we are part.

In Defense of Food shows us how, despite the daunting dietary landscape Americans confront in the modern supermarket, we can escape the Western diet and, by doing so, most of the chronic diseases that diet causes. We can relearn which foods are healthy, develop simple ways to moderate our appetites, and return eating to its proper context-out of the car and back to the table. Michael Pollan's bracing and eloquent manifesto shows us how we can start making thoughtful food choices that will enrich our lives, enlarge our sense of what it means to be healthy, and bring pleasure back to eating
