Donald Jack's Leacock Medal-winning classic, Three Cheers for Me, just came out in e-book format. This is the original, un-revised 1962 version that won the Leacock (a very hard to find volume nowadays). I had the privileged of writing the foreword to this 50th anniversary edition, and I think fans (who may only have ever seen the revised version that Jack tinkered with to make the start of a series) will find this an enjoyable read:

  • McAuslan

A most amusing collection of stories, loosely based on the author's own years in a Scottish regiment in WW2, the common element in the tales being the lowest common denominator - Private McAuslan - whom the narrator has the misfortune of commanding.

    cool.....

  • Peabody

Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody series (about a couple of archaeologists in the late 19th century & early 20th century) are, on the surface, historical mysteries. But the tone of the narrator, her unconscious irony, her foibles, and her attitude towards social conventions and parenting, all make for a very amusing read. Peters creates eccentric characters that are constantly entertaining to follow, making the whole series easily qualify as "seriously funny".

  • Knights of the Sea ~ A Grim Tale of Murder, Politics, and Spoon Addiction ~

My latest book is finally out. It's a bit hard to sum up in one line, though the sub-title gives a pretty good idea of the tone...

It's a mix of crime and comedy, set in the Maritimes in the 1880s. If I add that it contains a future prime minister, assassins, a werewolf, a ghost, a vegetarian, a Scots impersonator, and a submarine, that might give you some idea of it. Oh, and it also includes Alexander Graham Bell picnicking without any clothes on.

I suppose you might call it "history with a twist".

    Here's the latest review:

"I was first drawn to Knights of the Sea by the hilarious cover art. Now, having read the book, I can say two things: First, the art is accurate! Every element of the cover design — wolf, capsized boat, ghostly damsel, and lemon — is present in the plot. Second, the book is just as funny as the cover, and in a very good way… Paul Marlowe’s style of humor is reminiscent of Neil Gaiman’s lighter works… if you enjoy dry wit, Victoriana/steampunk elements, and plucky teenagers saving the world, you’ll probably like Knights of the Sea. It’s an tale of high adventure that takes a humorous look at… well, pretty much everything, from politics to romance to lycanthropy. Give it a shot if you liked Stardust or Good Omens." - Kelly Lasiter, FantasyLiterature.com
