  • Eden Robinson

Posted by Samantha Harvey, 4 years ago

Has anyone read any of Eden Robinson's novels? I recently read Monkey Beach, which has me interested in picking up the book of short stories she wrote entitled Traplines, which won the Winifred Holtby Prize in 1998. Monkey Beach was nomintaed for the Giller Award in 2000 (losing to Mercy Among the Children by David Adams Richards). I've been dying to get my hands on her second novel, Blood Sports, as well. Any other Eden Robinson fans?

  • The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill

Posted by Toni Osborne, 4 years ago

I cannot recommend this novel enough, Mr Hill is a fantastic story teller, It won the 2008 Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best Book and the 2007 Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize and has been nominated for the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award. A #1 Canadian Bestseller.

The novel highlights the issues of equality and human rights and the never ending struggle to obtain them.

  • The Piano Man's Daughter

I spent almost the entire holiday weekend reading Timothy Findlay's
The Piano Man's Daughter. This is the first book by Findlay I have ever read and I'm completely in love with this story. This is a great book about Toronto, it's an historical novel and it is beautifully written with wonderful characters and a long, epic plot. I have 80 pages left and I can't wait to pick it up after work today. I'm really impressed by the writing and recommend this to anyone who wants to read a great novel written on a huge canvas.

Not nessecary to be a hockey fan

Posted by Rebecca, 4 years ago

I don't think you need to be a hockey fan to read and enjoy King Leary. Hockey is just the back drop for the story of a man looking back on his life and realising he wasn't as perfect as he thought he was.

  • Late Nights on Air-didn't keep me up late

Posted by Alans, 4 years ago

I wasn't overly impressed with Elizabeth Hay's Giller award winner
Late Nights on Air. The obsessive nature of the principle relationship
really turned me off and I found the interactions of the characters to be
somewhat soap-operaish. The best part of the novel for me was an
extended canoe trip that takes up most of the latter half of the novel.
I have read an earlier book by Elizabeth Hay called "Student of Weather" and I enjoyed that book much more then this one. Has anyone else read this book? I'm surprised it has been such a bestseller because I don't think it would appeal to that many people.

What did everyone think of the Canada Reads Selections and the debate. I was pleasantly surprised that King Leary won. I read for pleasure when I get to pick what I read and feel that King Leary will fit the bill. Can't wait to get started on it.

    White Pine

Are there any other people out there involved in OLA Forest of Reading Program. I am a high school librarian and we run the White Pine Program and am wondering how other groups are doing with there programs. Ours is running great this year and the books are being far better received than they were last year. My favourite so far is the Droughtlanders by Carrie Mac
