  • Politics meets Art

Posted by jes, 4 years ago

There is a current trend with "street" artists to create an expression of their political perspective. Flickr is flooded with beautiful examples as are blogs. (Maybe this is part of the issue with Canadian politics? An inability to become inspired to the point of creating art? hmm...)

Here's a few examples, and some blogs to check out.:

  • Election Day Reminder: VOTE!

Just a friendly reminder to cast your ballot and have your say. No matter what your political affiliation - being engaged politically, culturally and ideologically matters. Every vote counts.

  • Good suggestions

Posted by Sandy Shamon, 4 years ago

    Hello all,
I was wondering if you could recommend some good books which are not too long and are written in lay person's language about American Politics in Iraq. Something more general about Middle Eastern politics might also do. Thank you in advance.

  • PM Debate

Posted by Heather Campbell, 4 years ago

I am writing this post with an extreme sense of frustration regarding the "debate" that was just presented to Canadians in efforts to help us clarify our choices within the upcoming election.
I didn't finish watching it because I thought the manner in which it was structured and the conduct of the candidates was utterly terrible. As a political science student, I tuned into this debate with the hope that the policies of each party would be outlined in a comprehensive manner and the advantages and disadvantages would be "debated". However, instead when watching the debate, I felt like I was tuning into a home video of my brother and I bickering as children.
Due to my frustration, I decided instead to watch the U.S VP debate. I don't think its a very good representation of Canadian politics when a Canadian citizen feels they got more out of an American election debate when they can't even vote in that country.
Although I am sure I will hear all about what others felt regarding the debate within my courses next week, I am interested in hearing discussion about it outside the walls of academia.
How do the rest of you feel about the debate? Did it really accomplish anything, or were the divisions between our options made even less clear? Did our potential leaders present and conduct themselves in a professional political manner, or in a manner characterized by arguing and finger pointing? Was there a clear "winner" of this debate amidst all the name calling?
I look forward to hearing some fellow booklovers (who happen to have an interest in politics) views on this subject matter.

  • Art of the Possible - sussman

Posted by Mike Hogeterp, 4 years ago

The election has many of us groaing at partican shenanigans. The temptation is to ignore the lot and disengage because 'we can't make a differnece anyways.' Well that's where Amanda Sussman's book, Art of the possible comes in. I appreciate this book on a host of levels - it's respect for democracy and the noble task of policy making, it's practical orientation and it's refreshing accessiblity (after all political writing can be ponderous). I'll be using this book as a handbook for citizenship long after this election is done and over with.
