  • What are some of your thoughts on this book?

Posted by Alicia, 3 years ago

I just finished 13 to Life by Shannon Delany. I actually won this book from a website so I thought that I'd give it a shot. I thought that it has good "bones" but I was sort of disappointed with it a little. I was confused by the whole Sarah story line, maybe it will expand in the other books in the series, and the ending just sort of ended.... I know there is another book coming out in Feb 2011... but shouldn't there be some sort of closure in a book even if it is the first of a series?

Has anyone read this book? If so, what are your thoughts? Obviously, there will be spoilers in this post, so if you are planning on reading this book... DO NOT ENTER!!

I've read it and I thought it was okay. I was expecting something better but in the end, nothing really stood out that made me go "Wow!". I didn't like Jessie after learning how forgiving she was was about the whole Sarah thing. The book kind of felt sloppy.
This was my review on Chapters:

Sloppy is a very good way of describing this book. I was so hoping to like it as, like I said above, it has good bones. I like the characters, but they really didn't go anywhere except for Jessie finally letting go and liking Pietr back. And why in all that is holy is Jessie haning onto Sarah so much? Is it because her mother's last words to her were to take care of the "other driver"?

I will more than likely read the next book in the series just to see if it goes anywhere.

The whole Jessie remaining friends with Sarah was just wrong to me and after that, I couldn't relate to her at all. If someone had caused that much pain in my life, I wouldn't befriend them so easily. It's not even like Sarah was a nice person, which was weird because she wasn't like that in the beginning. It felt like the author suddenly finally decided she needed to throw in an explanation about how her mother died. Just the turn of events was unexpected... and not necessarily in a good way.

I'm going to read the next book too but I'm not going to be as excited to get to it the first time around. Everything kind of really picked up by the ending, so it will be interesting to see how it goes..

I haven't read this book but your comments mirror something that was said at book club last night. We compared a teen novel and adult novel by Jeri Smith-Ready. I really enjoyed both books but the teen one seems to follow a trend where the first book kind of rambles along until the very end and then tries to grab your attention at the very end to hook you into reading the next one.
I found this to be true of Fallen, Strange Angels, Need and even Kelley Armstrong's The Reckoning. If it's suppose to end that trilogy it doesn't do a very good job. It should not have been marketed as a trilogy but as a series.
After reading the first three titles I was not anxiously waiting for the follow ups.
