  • The new BBC production of Emma on PBS

Posted by Fiction Editor, 2 years ago

Part 1 of the newest BBC production of Emma aired Sunday night on PBS, and I really enjoyed it. It took me a little while to get used to Jonny Lee Miller as Mr. Knightley (I kept flashing back to Hackers), but I have a soft spot for him, so he quickly won me over. And Romola Garai is very good as Emma -- I can't wait to see the rest of it. Has anyone else seen it?

My boyfriend downloaded it for me back when it originally aired in the U.K. and I loved it. I kept thinking of Edmund from the 1999 Mansfield Park whenever I saw Jonny Lee Miller (but he was a great Mr.Knightly ;) and I haven't seen Romola since Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights so that was nice.

Cool, I don't think I have PBS so I missed it on Saturday.
Valerie Boucher do you know where your boyfriend downloaded it from?

@ ly n' sin: It was the website torrentbytes.net but its a private tracker that is really hard to become a member for and it takes things off after 2 months so it is long gone now... I just checked though and you can get it off of btjunkie.org (it's a public site and all 4 parts are up)

I think some PBS stations are re-airing Part 1 on Saturday morning (in the Toronto area, it's being re-aired at 11 am on Saturday) so it might be worth checking your local TV listings.

Having watched Part 1 I'm still not sure about Jonny Lee Miller...I much prefer Jeremy Northam but nevertheless I think the Emma/Knightley relationship in this production is very sweet. Looking forward to Part 2.

So what did you guys think after watching the full movie?
I thought it wasn't bad and had some good moments, but was it just me or was it missing something. Nothing bad I think and I did enjoy the new version with each new version of the characters.

I enjoyed it. I think I might have enjoyed it more if I had read the book first. But it was a good way to spend a couple Sundays.

Persuassion looks like it will be good. It's coming up this spring.

I personally liked this version much better than GP version, it just seemed more authentic MHO
