  • The Unsung Muses: Palahniuk's Invisible Women

Posted by Kenneth Mackendrick, 4 years ago

It has been fascinating going through Palahniuk's "approved" list. I'm still working on carrying his recommended reading over but I've noticed that the recommendations are more selective than his actual reading habits.

Yes, Amy Hempel, Joy Williams, and Katherine Dunn are all mentioned. How could they not be? But what about the other muses? There are a good number of female writers that Palahniuk has referred to in interviews that didn't make THE CULT cut. Why not?

My guess: the recommendations for THE CULT are geared toward a male audience, stereotyped as relishing the obscene and pornographic, however literary and well written.

Here's a list of the Invisible Women that CP has referred to but passed over in silence in the "Chuck Palahniuk Approves . . ." list.

    Joan Didion
    Nora Ephron
    Zadie Smith
    Lucy Ellman
    Alicia Erian
    Maya Anjelou
    Joyce Carol Oates
    Rebecca Wells
    Whitney Otto
    Erma Bombeck
    Amy Tan

Consider this a tribute to some of the great writers have that made minimalism possible and as vibrant as it is today.
