Artist Chris McGrath, cover art: White Night, book 9

This is a cross post, but it belongs here more than any other place. ;-D

I've been meaning to make a review of this series for awhile now, but have been side tracked the last few weeks.

I realized the reason I had never picked up this series sooner was because I had fallen into the same direction that most of the book recommendations posted here have. That is a heavy leanings to the Venus persuasion.

For me anyway, most of the protagonists in my favorite series have been women. And, like most things of repetition, you get comfortable with it.

I picked up "Storm Front", drawn to it by it's compelling art on the cover. I almost put it down again because the narrative character was a man! I did the mental head slap and placed the book in my basket.

I will admit at first it was strange to be in a man's head, then I turned to the second page and consistently turned pages one after the other through 10 more books. Outside of Laurell K. Hamilton, I have never finished a series so fast. I practically ignored my kids for two weeks and went to bed at 2 & 3 in the morning.

What do I like so much about this series? The answer is EVERYTHING. The action is fast paced, the stories intelligent. The characters consistent and the plot contains just the right balance of humor, drama and sexuality.

The cast is LARGE, sporting politically minded Wizards, evil and not so evil vampires, tricksey fae, kick ass werewolves, Chicago police, the mob and the "Fist of God" (in the literal sense).

The writing is cleverly written, and the character banter had me wiping tears of laughter so often I was getting pretty intense looks from strangers.

I liked them so much I ransacked the library for the anthologies that held the Dresden short stories.

*Sigh* It's going to be torture to wait for April 2009 when book eleven, "Turn Coat" is released.

Below are my favorites in the series.

if you can't wait for your next book i would suggest picking up the comic. They are done really great and Harry is so NICE and yummy. There is welcome to the jungle (prequel i believe) and then they are currently doing Storm front (got my copy this week!!!)
I would have to agree, that i didn't pick this series up earlier was because it was written and marrated by a man and i wasn't going to give it a chance. But the need to spend money on books took over, i read them and fell in love almost instantly. It was a great break from all the romance that i read and people like Laurel who have gotten off track. I love this series so much and it has stayed strong so far, i hope he keeps it up. i have never seen the TV show, but i don't watch TV!!

The TV show bites. Stick with the books is my suggestion.

The TV show/Movie always sucks. I heard that Laurel is getting Anita on the screen, small or large, i don't know if it was descided. I personally think that this is a bad idea, but that maybe belongs in a different post.
As for Dresden, its too bad that the TV show sucked, because i think that there is great potentialy to make it, well great. The books are amazing, the comics are also really good. I think that the reason i do not like the TV adaptations is that they are too far from the book and they try to please TV people, of which i am not. Also, things in books do not always work on TV and visa versa.

It really depends on the vision and talent of the movie/television makers. It seems everything Joss Whedon touches is gold. I feel the same about Alan Ball, the creator of Six Feet Under and American Beauty screenwriter. The Sci-fi channel got a hold it, and with minimal production quality, budget and time they threw out a hallow impression of Jim Butcher's creation. Give it to a good production team that also understands the fan base, and the author's vision and then you may have a REALLY great series or movie. I'd love to see STORM FRONT as a movie (a good one). I caught the 1992 version of Captain America on TV last night. No wonder it never saw the silver screen! It was awful!! Laughably awful. Looking forward to the new one.

Well that is because Joss is god. Its more movies to books, then the other way. I think for me it's b/c the books are just so good that i have certain expectations for the TV/movie, andi have yet to get something that is good enough for me. Maybe my standards are too high. I just got a copy of Blood Ties season 1, so i am hoepfully going to watch that soon. I read the books a while back so maybe if i take a huge break it will be better. I have mixed hope for twilight. I was in walmart the other day and some teenager was screeming becuase she saw a poster of Edward. I had to leave, makes me role my eyes. I will have to get my hands of Dresden and see. Personally i think he is so yummy, as long as it has Butchers humour it should be good.

Hearing you about Twilight fans! I have tix for Friday and I am wondering if I should've waited for a few weeks. I have visions of screaming girls in the theatre every time Robert Pattinson speaks. Uuugh! I hope not.

As for Butcher's humor in the series... as I said, they "butchered" it and not in a good way. Stupid things like removing his trademark duster and staff for a hockey stick and hoodie. Also, while the guy is not bad looking it seems every episode he is getting some. He's like some randy jock magician. They also removed bob the skull in favor of a full body person/spirit. Not a bad choice, but it takes away a bit of the bizzare. The casting wasn't that bad, but the overall show quality was "Campy", like New Knight Rider campy.
