It's great to see the group growing. I appreciate everyone's interest in joining.

Where do we begin with this discussion? I've read several books on Oprah's list. What's strange to me is that I enjoy the books, but I don't always want others to see the 'Oprah Selection' sticker applied to the cover. I'm not entirely sure why exactly. I suppose it's the feeling that I'm only reading it because she suggested it to her fans. It's as though I feel like a mindless sheep, or unable to think of a title on my own.

In the end, I think it's great to motivate people to read, but the endorsement is slightly puzzling for some strange reason. There have been a few books, such as 'A Million Little Pieces', that I personally felt undeserving of praise. I loved the first 10-15 pages, but then felt the writing style changed and the author's voice lacked authenticity. I then went onto the net and after a littlle research felt validated in my hunch that something was up.

I've also read a lot of books that Oprah has recommended. It's does not bother me that her Oprah sticker is on the book, at the Chapters store I go to there are always books without her sticker on them. I think for me she has open my scope to read many new authors. I read a varirey authors/books I probably would not of read had I not heard them recommended on her show.

I agree with anything and anyone who encourages people to read. Do people dislike Oprah because they think her fans are more like members of a cult?

I absolutely agree that getting people to read is a good thing. Regarding the debate, though, maybe it’s because I have always been a reader (not an Oprah’s Book Club convert) that I have rejected her little logo. I’ve never read a book BECAUSE it was chosen for the club, but, like Merlin, I don’t want to be judged on the stamp (if only it were a just a sticker; then I could take it off). If I want to read an Oprah’s Book Club selection, I will go out of my way to find an alternate publication.

I know exactly what you mean about not wanting people to see the Oprah Book Club selection, I too try to find ways not to show it. Even though I've read many of her books and I appreciate, wholeheartedly, what she is doing with her current selection, I still feel like I'm just following the masses and not making my own choices, tho' it's likely I would have decided to read the selection anyway. I want to know that it's my decision and not based on a suggestion from a mass marketer like Oprah.

For me, the Oprah selections are great because they introduce me to books I may not have considered before. I check out the books to see if they are something I would like to read and decide from there. I think Oprah's love of books and reading is a wonderful thing to share with the world.

I definitely agree with those of you who say that if it wasn't for Oprah's suggestion of certain titles, we may never have come across and read them on our own. Although I love to think of myself as a free thinking individual who can chose books to read without somebody's suggestion or direction, I definitely have gone searching for titles that she has suggested, because they sounded interesting to me. Just because she suggested the titles and brought them to my attention doesn't mean I am definitely going to read them, if they don't sound good, I don't bother. In that way I still feel that I am a free thinking individual, and I don't try to hide her label at all.
