  • With the End of Summer...

    Posted by jbonanza, 3 years ago

    ...comes the end of my Summer reading list.

    I read a bit more in July than I have in August. Here goes:

    1. Field Guide to Getting Lost - Rebecca Solnit
    2. The Flying Troutmans - Miriam Toews
    3. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Stieg Larsson
    4. Pop-Up Book of Phobias - Gary Greenberg (It counts! I swear!)
    5. Women - Charles Bukowski
    6. Motherless Brooklyn - Jonathan Lethem
    7. Pulp - Charles Bukowski
    8. The Moonstone - Wilkie Collins
    * Bonjour, Tristesse
    9. The Glass Menagerie - Tennessee Williams
    10. Kafka on the Shore - Haruki Murakami
    11. What I Talk About When I Talk About Running - Haruki Murakami (Almost finished as well)
    * That Mad Ache

    *Shoot! I just realized I forgot to add Bongour, Tristesse - Francoise Sagan in there. I BELIEVE I read it somewhere in between The Moonstone and The Glass Menagerie. I know this doesn't matter to anyone else, but it matters to my neuroticism.

    *I will also probably finish That Mad Ache - Sagan before summer is up as well.

    Great list! There are a lot of books on here that I'd like to read. I'm determined to buy and read all the books by Charles Bukowski especially. This is off topic, but have you ever read anything by Henry Miller?

    Thanks, LEB! I haven't gotten to Henry Miller yet, where do you think I should start?

    You're most welcome! I have no idea. I haven't read anything by Henry Miller yet either. I just recently bought Tropic of Cancer, so that is probably where I will start.

    Haha, LEB. That was pretty random. I love random. By the way for Bukowski if you want to start with him I started with Post Office, which was his first novel, but later in the life of his protagonist Hank Chinaski. I still think it's a good place to start with him though. Although, I don't think it would make a huge difference. I just wouldn't start with Pulp. Pulp just didn't measure up to the others.

    When you get around to him, I'd love to hear your thoughts! I always love hearing your thoughts on anything, but I will especially like hearing what you have to say about the dirty old man Bukowski is.

    Thanks for the tip on Charles Bukowski. I ordered Post Office a few days back, so I'll start there. That's too bad about Pulp. I'll probably still read it, but now I'll know not to expect as much. Hahaha, I'll make sure to discuss my thoughts with you!
