  • Sophie the Giraffe pulled from Toys R Us Canada shelves

Posted by TGWG, 3 years ago

The product has been removed from their shelves and is not available for purchase.

Health Canada has not issued a recall or product warning but according to the representative at Toys R Us “the product is under assessment and they like to err of the side of caution.” There have been several reports of choking incidents and other toy stores have also pulled the product from their shelves.

UPDATE: This toy was made available for purchase again in March 2009.

This comment has again come from the woman who has never held a Sophie. Why do you have it in for a toy that has been safely sold for nearly 50 years? Other stores have not taken Sophie from their shelves. This is a Toys R Us decision, most likely based on the fact that they were heavily critized over their stocking of several products containing lead.
Health Canada has not said this product is likely to be recalled. Sophie is a very safe teething toy - and babies should not be left unattended. End of story.

This is news and what I am doing is alerting parents that there have been reported incidents of choking with this toy. There are actual reported incidents to Health Canada that they are now conducting an independent product review. Then, you have Toys R Us pulling the product as a precaution (which should be applauded for consumer safety). I am not advising parents to not buy the toy, I do not "have it in" for the toy and yes, I have held "Sophie the Giraffe" and I made the decision to not purchase it for my family.

Are you the same "Jane Wood" from Bug in a Rug, the Canadian distributor for the toy?
    Just wondered,
    Sarah

I bought Sophie for my baby and he loves it. I felt it was very safe for my son because of the non toxic materials.
