Leaving aside the age old "art for art" or "art for life" debate, it is my considered opinion that art (including literature) can be classified into three groups. A good piece of art is that which changes a person's life for the better, no matter how small this change is. A bad piece of art is that which changes a person's life for the worse, no matter how small this change is. All the rest simply don't count.
