Yes, I thought the books were much better than the movie adaptations. Books just have something special that cannot be reproduced on film.

The Southern Vampire Series is about a young woman in Louisiana and her experienced with the supernatural. The Lovely Bones is about a young girl that gets murdered. She goes to heaven and tells the story of what her family is going through as a result of her death. After Dark is about a group of people in Tokyo over 24 hours. They're all good, imho.
