The Magicians

The Magicians | Lev Grossman

The Fantasy of Growing Up

For readers who think fantasy means escape, The Magicians is a stern and beautiful counter-argument: fantasy is a powerful way to look at reality. It can help us feel. It can help us think. Quentin Coldwater is a cynical, lovelorn high achiever, constantly chasing the next prize, only to find it doesn’t bring him the happiness he imagined. When he is chosen to attend the magical college of Brakebills, it is ev… read review

The point of intersection is, of course, the Great War.

Barry's protagonist Willie Dunne is a working-class boy who joins the Royal Dublin Fusiliers because … view post

As the "remainder" person - boy, do I ever WISH that you could find a copy of Preaching to the Corpse & send it over to Bay/Bloor! I am now fixated on that one - tried She Said Boom, haven't tried Abelard yet & there is a new one on the Danforth - ReRead...? Oh well, we all need a challenge, n'est pas?

I wish that all of us would get into the habit of posting our reviews on the book site. Me, included! So many books are rated, but not reviewed. Go figure. & with that, a bonne nuit.

A Book Expo in New York sounds like a dream work trip for me!

I really enjoyed Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World too. I think I would say it's my second favourite. Sputnik Sweetheart is my favourite of his though. I know it's not his best, but I loved it. One of those books I remember feeling entranced while reading. I've been entranced reading all of Murakami's so far though.

I hope you have a lovely rest of the week!
