Blindsight

Blindsight | WATTS PETER

This Is Your Brain in Space

Blindsight is a neurological phenomenon that occurs with some kinds of brain injury: the afflicted person believes he or she has gone blind, because the experience of sight is gone--but if you throw this person a ball, he or she can catch it. The eye still sees, the brain perceives the sight and directs the body accordingly--it is only the person's consciousness that cannot see. This and other curiosities abound in Peter Watts' scarily intelligent exploration of humanity's first contact with … read review

Great books on the Great War

Sebastian Barry was nominated for the Booker Prize for A Long Long Way. Ten years earlier, Pat Barker won the same prize for Ghost Road, the third in the Regeneration trilogy. The point of intersection is, of course, the Great War.

Barry's protagonist Willie Dunne is a working-class boy who joins the Royal Dublin Fusiliers because … view post

Hello Claire, thanks for adding me as your friend. I look forward to reading your reviews. Do you work at one of Toronto locations?

I wish that all of us would get into the habit of posting our reviews on the book site. Me, included! So many books are rated, but not reviewed. Go figure. & with that, a bonne nuit.

Claire - you should post your Perkins review under the book's title - seems that there are no reviews??? I really enjoy reading what your tho'ts are on various books. + "meeting" another eclectic reader. What would we do w/o books???

A Book Expo in New York sounds like a dream work trip for me!

I really enjoyed Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World too. I think I would say it's my second favourite. Sputnik Sweetheart is my favourite of his though. I know it's not his best, but I loved it. One of those books I remember feeling entranced while reading. I've been entranced reading all of Murakami's so far though.

I hope you have a lovely rest of the week!

Don't worry about taking awhile to reply! Which you didn't, by the way! Did you get to go anywhere fun for your business trip?

I think I am going to wait on the Murakami. I realized I should as it's coming out at the end of Summer. If I purchased the hardcover now it would just seem like a breakdown before the finish line.. or something.

Which is your favourite of Murakami's by the way?

I hope you enjoyed a lovely beginning to June!

Hello! I hope you are doing splendidly. I just happened upon your profile while stalking books, (or looking at books while stalking profiles, whichever) and saw that you are reading What I Talk About When I Talk About Running. How are you liking it? I've heard rather mixed reviews, and I love Murakami, but I hate hardcover, so I was going to hold out for paperback. Should I go for the hardcover?

Thank you! Once again, I love your reviews!

Thanks for reciprocating my e-friendship! I was kind of scared after the two comments, and the message that I might have came on a little strong. I was just excited to find lots of new recommendations!

I hope you are having a lovely week!
