A Complicated Kindness

A Complicated Kindness | Miriam Toews

Definitely a difficult one to put down

A Complicated Kindness was a story that was written purposely almost to leave you feeling a bit depressed about the state of the main character/narrarator Nomi, a girl living in a mennonite society that shares none of the same beliefs or values with the rest of her mennonite community. She feels extremely trapped and isolated in her own town, and is almost polar opposites with everyone she knows. Her most fulfilling dream would be to go and live in a crowded city like New York City. Nomi's olde… read review

It's on my to read list, though it may take me a while to get to it. I have the bad habit of sampling a couple of chapters from several books then choosing the one I want to read based on my mood.

Sure, the simplest way is to send a message to one another outlining a specific time to send and receive each other's email, then we can simply delete the message afterwards. Let me know when, I should be online for a good portion of the day.

It took me a while to get through The Hour I First Believed (almost 3 weeks) but it was gripping and so heartrending. As a general rule though, I don't like reading fiction immensely inspired by massive tragedies (9/11, etc) which in this case was the Columbine Massacres. But - Lamb is the king of sensitivity!

It really resonated with me. If you take away the external events he writes about, the main protagonist struck such a chord with me.... that it was eerie at times.

I have been looking for his other stuff for ages, but none of the Chapters stores near me ever have them; and I never remember them when I'm shopping online!
I much preferred Franny & Zooey to Catcher, for the simple reason that I'm a college student, so their level of restlessness and disenchantment resonates more fully with where I am in life.
As for John Green - I love his ideas for his novels. And usually the first couple chapters are gorgeous. But then it becomes dross and frustrating.

Hey, I'm reading 'Franny & Zooey" now and it is absolutely breathtaking! I don't know why I waited so long to read it.

That's true, which is why I always watch the movie before I read the book because I like to give the film a chance to stand on its own.
Oooh I have yet to watch that one - I guess I'll be watching it soon.
For book recommendations, I would say Nicole Krauss' 'The History of Love" and Jonathan Safran Foer's "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close".
For movies, I would definitely say "Lars & the real girl" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind".
What about you? Any recommendations for me?

    Hey there!

I'm reading The Hour I First Believed right now, but it's a slow read... too many distractions, too many podcasts... but it's precious. As for Salinger, I really connected with Seymour despite the fact that for all intents and purposes Zooey would be closer to me.

I admit that the beginning of Everything Is Illuminated is a bit hard to get into, but after the beginning history of Trachimbrod the novel becomes so endearing and gorgeous, you'll have a hard time putting it down.
The movie is one of my all-time favourites. Have you seen it? If you haven't, you should watch it before you read it because it's disappointing (or so I've heard) if you do it the other way around.
Haha thanks, I like my 'about me' section, too.

Hey, thanks for adding me. I see you have Everything Is Illuminated on you To Be Read list - I absolutely love that book (and its author). It really is a brilliant work of art.
