Dawn of the Arcana, Vol. 1

Dawn of the Arcana, Vol. 1 | Rei Toma

Medieval Fantasy Love Triangle

"Dawn of the Arcana" is a stunningly-illustrated manga that takes place in a medieval fantasy world inhabited by humans and "ajin", who are part humans and part animals. Prince Caesar of Belquat and Princess Nakaba of Senan must wed to keep the peace between their warring countries, but they have nothing in common. Prince Caesar wants to control his new bride, but soon discovers she is more than his match. Furthermore, he faces an unlikely rival - her faithful ajin servant, Loki. Although… read review

Flash Fiction Challenge

I just finished reading "Half-Minute Horrors", which is full of flash fiction horror stories by famous authors like Margaret Atwood, Holly Black and Kenneth Oppel.

If you are a writer, why not try writing one yourself? Here's one I've written at: http://nonesuchorphans.blogspot.com/p/dinnertime.html view post

I think it would make for an interesting story if the character learned after the journey that the goal wasn't really what s/he wanted/needed. Would you find it disappointing if the character didn't grow/change in the end? I'm not sure how I would feel.

If I drew a picture of the beginning to end, there would be little waves going up and down, no great conflict-- after reading a few chapters, I just knew the protagonist would be able to get out of anything. All in all I was disappointed. I guess making obstacles is difficult in a way because I don't want little waves :P.

You're so right, mostly all the books mention that. When I started writing the same story that I'm trying to rewrite now for probably the fourth time, there were so little obstacles and complications that I just hit a dead end. I guess it's easy to forget something so basic as that. I remember reading Lost Years Of Merlin a long while ago and in it there were obstacles the protagonist was facing but he was getting out of the obstacles so easily.

    Samia says:

The chapter I was reading stated that character must have a moral need (which hurts other characters) as well as a psychological need (which hurts only the character himself), and both should be linked together. The desire of the character must also be linked to the needs. I don't think I thought so deeply about character needs before. Do you ever read books about story writing? I need to get back in the habit of reading but at the same time I'm trying to set aside some time to write

Yes it was extremely annoying to wait but the fact that the volumes still have not been released may mean that they never will be. I think I'm sort of used to the idea of them never being released and because the manga doesn't seem popular, I probably won't find any fan translations either. It's unfortunate that some manga series r nvr completely translated; do u think you'll ever find out the end of Alichino? For the past two days I've been reading parts of 'anatomy of story'

How was the Looking Glass Wars? I noticed it has characters from Alice Wonderland. Also how is "Dawn of the Arcana"? I've never heard of it. I read a manga called "Arcana" that I really liked, however, I've been waiting two years for the next volume to be released, so it's probably not a good idea to get started on it. It had a really complex story about the protagonist's many past lives. I really gotta start reading again. I finished my last exam yesterday so maybe I'll get started today.

I recently found out that there's a movie for 'I capture the castle'. I watched it yesterday while doing math problems so I must have missed quite a few parts, but over all it was good. The father of the protagonist was really weird. And because they lived in a castle isolated from society, the girls just wanted to get married and leave. I really could not understand why none of them went to school in the film.

No magic for me neither! When I saw comments saying "Harry Potter for adults" I was like ...are we reading the same thing here?

    Samia says:

Have you been reading anything good recently? I'm afraid to read any novels at the moment in case I start neglecting my textbooks. I really want to read some classic romance novels such as "I capture the castle" by Dodie Smith, "a room with a view" or "the forsyte saga". I recently watched the film "Rebecca" (1940) which is based on a classic romance novel by Daphne du Maurier that I wanted to read. It was really good especially because of the twist that it had at the end.

I like how there's a bit of comedy in Merlin. You'll be surprised how much things change by the end of the third and fourth season. I'll have to check out Camelot after my semester finishes. I know if I like it too much, I'll want to watch it all in one day :P.

Here it is ladies. Our official Book Club Group. We can talk good or bad about the books we read together. It would be so much better to do this in person but since we're all spread out that unfortunatly won't be possible, so this is the next best thing. Enjoy!
