This book sets the bar high for writers who interweave fiction into non-fiction. It is truly a beautiful book, but one also that makes you think. The forces of oppression, the English with their Black and Tans in Ireland, the Americans with their CIA in Latin America, their Blackwater in Iraq (and elsewhere), contracting out government terrorism, are remarkably the same throughout time. Well-done! read review

A strange success

Had at Guelph-Humber for my lates book: Gabriel Sagard's Huron dictionary. It was organized by an Event-Planning Class at Humber College. The book arrived a mere two hours before the launch. The power went out half an hour before my presentation (fortunately there was natural lighting where I presented). Classes were let out because of the power outage. When power came back on I got to use a microphone, which I couldn't before as it would disrupt classes (now cancelled). A strange success. view post

  • I'm living in: Bolton

  • About Me:

I write non-fiction works about Aboriginal people in Canada, have three dogs (I couldn't write without them) and am a drummer in a band (sometimes rhythms initiate words). Since I first wrote this I have added five parrots to my life (what an education in life!). It is a picture of Quigley, our green Quaker parrot that I am using as my image.

  • My Works:

I have written five books about the Huron language. It is extinct, but the Jesuits of the 17th and 18th century put together dictionaries that rank among the most beautiful linguistic projects of all time. I also write books that question what sociologists, anthropologists, and other writers say about Aboriginal people. My most recent book is White Lies About the Inuit in that area.

  • Interests:

As I write about and am informed by Aboriginal languages, I am very much interested in making these languages a greater part of Canadian culture. That, beer, dogs, drumming and reading are my interests.

  • Favourite Author:

Recently, I picked up a poetry collection of Carl Sandburg. Amazing.

  • Favourite Quote:

"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen, and philosophers and divines." Ralph Waldo Emerson

Thanks, John. Very nice of you. If its easier, my regular email is manufrhel@yahoo.com. Not sure if you're aware of University of California, Berkeley Language center. http://blc.berkeley.edu/ has some archives of first nation languages including Inuktitut. Some extinct and almost extinct languages.
