I understand now why so many schools teach this book. Teenagers might find the ideas profound, but the themes are too obviously expressed to give adult readers any aesthetic pleasure. The premise is good: a group of English schoolboys is plane-wrecked on a deserted island during the war. In the absence of adult rules, will they remain good English boys or will they become savages?
