Penguin Classics Haunting Of Hill House

Penguin Classics Haunting Of Hill House | Shirley Jackson

Great ghost story

The word is, the house built by old Hugh Crain eighty some year ago is haunted. The people in the nearest village are terrified of it, so don’t you go around asking questions – they’ll drive you away. Many mysterious deaths are tied to this place, and if you don’t want to join its restless inhabitants, don’t even think of staying after dark. You have been warned. The Haunting of Hill House is such a delicious horror tale! It recounts a story of four unique individuals, who come to the Hill … read review

This is embarrassing, but after I finished reading Harry Potter Book 5, when Sirius died, I was depressed for the whole month. Totally ruined half of my summer.

I actually really enjoyed Ishiguro's writing style. I'm excited to read some of his others. Never Let Me Go kind of reminded me of Oryx and Crake. If you've read that one, if you haven't you should! NLMG was also added to the list of books that I can fit on one hand that have made me cry. Ho-Hum.

Sad books seem to be our theme lately.

I wasn't going to pick up The Book of Negroes, but a really lovely lady gave me a copy, and I found myself reading it last night. It is incredibly sad so far and I'm only 30 pages in. I might have to wait until I'm secure with my state of mind to finish reading it.

    Take care!

I remember reading Silverwing, and all of those by Kenneth Oppel in my younger days! What's Airborn about? I could look it up, but...

I'm reading a few right now. I rarely ever read more than one book at a time, but for some reason I couldn't stick with one. Short attention span lately I guess. On the go right now: Popco, Artificial Silk Gilr, Suite Francaise (although that's really stopped), and The Book of Negroes.

You are right! Naomi Watts is ideal for 20's-30's movies. I think it's her look. I will admit to hating her in that movie though. Something leads me to believe that Maughm hated women by the way he writes them both in The Painted Veil, and Of Human Bondage.

What are you reading these days?

I'm doing pretty swell, thank you for asking.

I will have to read The Painted Veil, I watched the movie of it, but from what I hear the movie is a bit different. I actually watched it when I was reading Of Human Bondage, and was alone for the weekend last Summer. I don't recommend doing that, as it was super lonely. The Painted Veil is a movie to watch with company, so you can get hugged afterwards.

    Thank you for the recommendation!

Hope you are enjoying a lovely Spring!

I'm so glad you enjoyed Geek Love! How are you doing?

Also, because I know we share a '20s obsession, I picked up a book called Artificial Silk Girl that I think you should check out! P.S. It's hardcover!

Hope you have a splendid evening!

As much as I hate waiting for anything, one benefit of waiting is that it gives you something to look forward to in the future.

Thanks for all the information on David Sedaris! You're incredibly helpful.

I hope you have a lovely weekend too. Take care and happy reading!

Oh, that's too bad that you are going to have to wait awhile before you get Death: A Life from the library. Hopefully everyone ahead of you on the list is a speedy reader.

When You Are Engulfed in Flames sounds like a great book. I read short stories and that sort of thing quite a bit, so I bet I would really enjoy WYAEIF. I'm going to add it to my wish list. Have you read anything else by Sedaris? If so, would you recommend it?

Have a lovely day! Happy reading!

You're welcome! I'm assuming you saw my review. Let me know what you think of Death: A Life if you get around to reading it. I'd love to know someone else's opinion on it.

What are you reading at the moment? Have you read anything particularly good that you would recommend?

Happy reading and thanks for the note!
