The Winter Vault

The Winter Vault | Anne Michaels

Long awaited, but ultimately disappointing (for me)

Fans of Anne Michaels have been waiting 12 years for this book. I found Part One, set on the Nile River during construction of the Aswan Dam, with references back to the building of the St. Lawrence Seaway, to be quite strong. Part Two, all set in Toronto but with memories of wartime Warsaw, pretty much went right by me. If you like poetic language, you probably will like this book better than I did. Little Monsters by Charles Lambert

A very worthwhile book, not yet published in North America. Carol is a 13 year old whose mother has been murdered by her father. She is sent to an aunt at a pub near Buxton -- an unwanted addition to an unhappy domestic scene. The story, very reminiscent of The Welsh Girl, then splits into two eras, picking up her adult life outside a refugee camp on the Adriatic short of Italy. A book well worth reading. view post

I haven't heard anything about it. Maybe as the pub date approaches ....

Thanks Kevin, I'm a big reader of Canadian fiction. I usually try to read all the Giller and GG finalists before the announcements but although I have all the books I've fallen short this year. I'm looking forward to postings from this group -- Support Canadian Writers!!!!!

Kevin, unfortunately I have never followed the Giller prize very closely. This year I read Swan and De Sa in between their announcement and Boyden's victory, but it doesn't grip me like the Booker. A sad confession for a Canadian but there it is. Right now I am in the middle of Hensher, which will end my Booker 08 reading. I read a LOT of the Shadow Booker books from the site, but fall/winter is for old classics! Right now the Grossman translation of Cervantes and some Dickens. What about you?

Great to hear from you. I also think the book is wonderful. It will be great to know so many people will now read it. It is fun to have this community. Don't hesitate to write if you have any great suggestions for me to read.

Thanks Kevin - it was a remarkable evening and I do feel I have won in so many ways. Colm Toibin has kindly offered to support the sale of BL in the UK with a quote/blurb. My agent has also contacted Margaret Atwood to do the same. She also was very supportive. I can't help feel good about having those international names backing up the book. Currently 8 publishers in the UK are taking a look. Keep your fingers crossed.
You've been great and thank you.
