The Enchantress of Florence

The Enchantress of Florence | Salman Rushdie

A writer without peer

The publisher's blurb for The Enchantress of Florence does credit to the surface plot of the story. However, to read a Rushdie novel is all about depths, dimensions -- mirrors, if you will. And it is mirrors this novel addresses, from the handmaiden of the Enchantress herself, to relationships, histories, and philosophies. To read this novel is like looking at a mirror reflected in a mirror; the depths are infinite. There is the mirror of Qara Koz and her handmaiden, and again of that relati… read review

Classic Canadian SF Brought Back to Life

Hank Hargreaves' classic short story collection, North by 2000 is being reissued March 1, 2012, by Five Rivers as North by 2000+, the plus indicating that it includes five new stories written since the first edition came out.

North by 2000 was the first collection ever marketed as Canadian SF and had a profound influence on the subsequent generation of Canadian SF writers. The stories are timeless.

Author and reviewer, J.W. Schnarr says, "This book is more than just … view post

WOW. GGK has (for the 5th time) been nominated for the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel 'Under Heaven'. On top of this, he has been nominated for the Aurora and Mythopoeic Award for Best Novel. What a writer! Wasn't one of your novels nominated for the Aurora?

Lorina. I find there's so much I want to talk to you about the two things we love the most: reading and writing. Unfortunately, we're restricted to 500 characters on Chapters. I'm interested in purchasing your books, asking for research suggestions and your opinion on my latest short story. Could you send an email to the following account so we can discuss these things at greater length: anathros77@hotmail.com
I look forward to hearing from you :)

I'm glad to see that you enjoyed Under Heaven (was there any doubt). It's hard to imagine a fantasy author who has written such a stellar and diverse collection of literature. I'm starting "Sailing to Sarantium" today to escape from Atlas Shrugged for a while. Have you read "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell" by any chance. I failed in my last recommendation but I wonder if this fine work would be right up your alley.

What's your opinion (if any) on Ken Follet's 'Pillars of the Earth'?

    Dean Cummings says:

I love Nietzsche! He is deliciously controversial and infinitely wise. He teaches people to think critically about the world around them. 'Human, All Too Human' is his longest book and arguably his worst. I'm reading them in order of publication. I have read Beyond Good and Evil already but I look forward to 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra' - his self-proclaimed magnum opus. Next week, I'm starting 'Atlas Shrugged' (6th longest book in the English language) and then on to GGK Sarantine Mosaic books :)

'The Golden Mean' lacked a consistent voice. Too modern is a good way to describe it but "split personality" perhaps comes a bit closer. I agree that Aristotle was over-masculinized and that the scenery was two-dimensional. However, I must say that there are moments of poetic beauty and philosophical accuracy (I even marked them in my book) that hints at a underlying talent that hasn't been actualized yet. In the end, I love Aristotle and had a bias in favour of the book before I read it.
