Enjoyable Writing; Characters, Not So Much

I liked the writing style of the book. It has an interesting central story and some really enjoyable side issues that are dealt with throughout. The plot moves along quickly and doesn't get bogged down. However, I found that some of the life-altering decisions some characters make around the second third of the book were difficult to sympathise with.     Yes! (Well, in Symphonia you can - not sure about Abyss). You get to choose a character to cook..more stars=more skill=more effect. And you just get random ingredients like kelp and bread and make it on the go ^^ very convenient. Is that how it's done in the Tales you've played?
