Oprah: A Biography

Oprah: A Biography | KELLEY KITTY

Oprah in one word? Gluttonous

I’ve been watching Oprah ever since her show went into syndication over twenty years ago. I spent countless afternoons with my grandmother, watching in amazement as the scandalous scenarios played out on Phil Donahue, Geraldo Rivera, and Oprah Winfrey. Talk TV was my lifeline to grownup happenings, and I felt like I was defying childhood by being able to watch it. Oprah was always my favourite. There was something about seeing a fearless, heavyset, black woman on TV, when all I had bee… read review

Happy Valentine's Day

That is the customary greeting on February 14th, but it is an illusion for many and a commercial cash-grab for most. What once was an opportunity for people to share and express love for one another, either by a hand-written love note, or some other form of romantic gesture, has turned into an all out gift-giving extravaganza, where florists and chocolatiers feel the need to rip us off by jacking their prices by at least 100%. What about the poor single person on Valentine’s Day? Bombarded … view post

Thanks for the tho't - I'm currently also working on a room box based on the Xmas tree (victorian setting) from Kingsbury's Xmas-themed mysteries. My oldest grandson wants me to do something from the Twilight series tho'.

Nice to hear you are back. You are now a married woman? If so, congratulations. Summer is packed will hiking, camping, kayaking, canoeing, mtb and a bit of reading. I am off for a week-long seakayaking excursion 800km north of Quebec city, in a couple of weeks. We will be paddling along Mingan National Park and I am promised to see whales and puffins. I plan on bring a couple of books too, eventhough I should concentrate on may drawing and sketching intstead. Glad to see you are back.

Hi Peachy. Where are you. I miss your posts. Where are you? I hope it's not the "quiting" of smoking that is keeping you at bay. I know it's hard. I struggle with it everyday.

Hi Peachy TO, if you changed your picture after we added you to our list then that's the problem - we can update the image on the page, but it's a manual thing sadly. I'll send a message to the tech team to fix it for you. Thanks for letting me know ;-)

Hi Peachy, Just read a book of my daughter's (14yrs) that her teacher recommended for her and I thought I would mention it to you since I know you work with kids books. The book is "The Isabel Factor by Gayle Friesen. I really enjoyed the story and would recommend it to all teenage girls. Good lessons about being a friend and being yourself. I also liked that since the main character is a budding journalist, she is always talking about how you write a good story. Hope you will give it a read!

I haven't read A Thousand Splendid Suns, but White Oleander is one of my favourites. Empire Falls, by Richard Russo, is also a tight, well-formed and -written book, and is also one of my favourites. If you're looking for something lighter after Mercy Among the Children, though, Kingfisher Days, by Susan Coyne, is a great little book to read between books. If you can find it. Happy reading!

I have read Angela's Ashes, but not The World According to Garp. I saw the movie Memoirs of a Geisha, too, and was so grateful that I'd read it first and knew all the details they didn't provide. I am also glad to hear you're enjoying Mercy Among the Children. Is it your first read by David Adams Richards?

I'm about 100 pgs in. I just started it Monday so I should be able to finish it by Friday and I will post my thoughts then but right now I'm enjoying it. It's giving me a strong Lord of the Flies feel.
I enjoyed reading your comments on the the book. I think I am the only person liking it so far. I guess I will have to read through the rest and see how I feel. I will keep you posted :)

Thanks Peachy TO, you are a sweetie. I talk with my girls a lot. That is nice to hear, being a parent is one thing that I aspire to be good at and it is the hardest thing that I do. My youngest just turned 16 yesterday and my oldest will turn 19 in a week. They both have such different view points on things, it is so interesting how they developed and formulated their opinions. They teach me a lot. You will like There's a Boy in the Girls Bathroom.
