I appreciated the sentiment of the message Pollan was trying to convey, but there were parts that I had to overlook as I didn't entirely agree with his opinions that were stated as fact. Some parts were just hyperbolic. The book also has a fairly narrow ethnocentric perspective.

Ridley has done an incredible job of presenting absolutely fascinating information (such as our "invasive" placenta that is largely formed by paternal factors to fight for resources for the growing fetus against the mother's body). Anyone with a modicum of curiousity will swallow this brain-food in one lush mouthful.

I was amazed at both the story and the fact that I had overlooked the work of Shauna Singh Baldwin - who has ties to Canada. It is an amazing story of strong-willed Sufi (Muslim) woman who served as a British secret agent during the second world war. If only such stories were better known by the public at large.

Those hovering at the brink of the "ah ha" moment

Eckhart Tolle has done an incredible job of articulating intuitive concepts that many have yet to acknowledge even exist. If you've ever had that moment of stillness as your mind is racing through its endless barage of thoughts and you stopped listening to it long enough to wonder at its relentlessness - then you will likely appreciate his insights as they will help you pay tribute to your true self as opposed to that chattering script in your head.
