Tough to really sink into

This is the first I have read by this author, and even though it wasn't my favorite book I do plan to contiue the series to see if it gets better. I found it really hard to really get into the characters becuase I found the author spent to much time trying to explain the Grey. With all the explination I still can't seem to picture it in my mind though, I felt lost, and I was also a bit disappointed that the lead never got the hang of it before the end.
