Outliers: The Story of Success

Outliers: The Story of Success | Malcolm Gladwell

Wonderfully told and thought-provoking

Outliers sets out to prove that success is not solely based on a person's inherent knowledge, power, or drive, but is (collectively) a factor of these and many other variables which may not be so apparent. These factors include the fortuity of opportunities (including both spatial and temporal), methods of parental upbringing, social-economic status and cultural legacies. Not only are these factors unapparent, they are commonly overlooked in favor of the popular notion that success is solely th… read review

Buying or borrowing books

I'm the kind of personal that loves buying books. I love the atmosphere of a book store. I love the sight of newly bound books stacked neatly on the shelves, screaming PICK ME, READ ME. I love the papery smell when a book is opened for the first time (a smell which I have dubbed the "new-book-smell" for how else can it be decsribed; I'm sure many of you know exactly what I mean). I prize that feeling of taking a book to the till and knowing that in just a few moments that it will be mine, … view post

    Hi Kayla,
The Birth House was really good, I enjoyed it. I hear ya on hanging around in bookstores and the library. I enjoy it. I like the atmosphere at Chapters. They know me by name at the library. I am in a lot picking up my holds. I use to take my girls to the library when they were young it was a good place to talk to other Moms and let the kids play. When they got tired we would get our books and read before bed. When they got a little older they joined the book clubs, they loved it.

But doesn't that happen to many books similar Twilight. Think of Harry Potter's popularity. I grew up reading books exactly like Harry Potter so to me Rowling's books were boring, predictable and lacked humour. However, I do find it scary that my female students identify so strongly with such a weakling like Bella. In some small part the series makes them believe that the stalker-prey mentality is a good thing. They want to be put in these traditional male-female roles. I shudder at the thought.

    Hey Kayla,
No worries, you do what you can. Love you DP, too cute. Behind on your reading, shame on you. LOL. Yah do what you can eh. I am currently reading The Birth House, it is good so far. I liked the Great and Terrible Beauty Series. Not sure if they spike your interest.

Nice to meet ya Kayla. My daughter's name is Kayla.
Cool to have someone else admit they love the new book smell. I also love the smell of new leather. Any recommendations - books to read or not to read.
