    Highly recommended

The voice inside my head cried "Yes! Yes! Yes!" at the top of her little lungs as she tumbled and cartwheeled for joy while reading this book. In fact, I found myself cheering out loud at some chapters.

Rework helped me reflect on my past. I could clearly identify why certain efforts were grindingly slow, fraught with frustration and sometimes failure.

Rework helps me put the present into perspective, providing tangible, common sense approaches to everyday business issues.

Rework will help guide the future. It will serve as a sane, logical and encouraging companion to my spirits when, at times, they will inevitably wilt.

The book's chapters are short, punchy and laced with simple brilliance.

A great read. Inspiring. Highly recommended.

    Inspiring

The book was a quick read (my favourite chapter is #9 - talk about brevity!) and overall I found it inspiring. I could feel my heart rate increase with the pace of his prose and the obvious passion he has for the subject matter.

    Pros

    * Recommends a systematic formula for creating a personal brand and leveraging social media.
    * Suggests tools that one might not have thought of (without information overload) and explains why they're valuable. (Speaking of which, time to sign up for ping.fm.) He also suggests some business ideas at the end of the book which, if you have the passion, have plausible potential.*
    * As I mentioned, it's a quick, inspiring read.

    Cons

    * Albeit not within the scope of the book, the starting point assumes you've already identified your passion. He might have recommended some thought starters like Pam Slim's Escape from Cubicle Nation or Chris Guillebeau's Art of Non-Conformity.
    * I have decided to follow Gary on Twitter; however, I don't really understand why his followers have the patience to wade through endless messages to @soandso. Don't people want real content? More analysis of Twitter techniques might have helped.

  • Having been a while since I was last in London and cheered by a declining pound, I picked up Suzy Gershman’s Born to Shop London guide for my trip mid-December 2008. An easy read and unapologetically American in style (her Lush obsession was amusing), Gershman’s guide was helpful, thorough and surprisingly reliable, given how quickly retail changes (see updates below). Thanks to Suzy, I discovered Boots No 7 beauty serum and where to get it at 8:30 pm (much easier to come by than she describes), the wonders of the Dover Street Market store, my happy place at Virginia in Holland Park, the joy that is wearing a pair of Tabio tights, and the funky and friendly secrets of Golborne Road. I was also happy to find that getting my VAT rebate was far easier than described.

My own tip when travelling? Talk to shop employees for their recommendations. It’s amazing how quickly and accurately they can steer you.

    Updates:
    - I was told Steinberg & Tolkien vintage shop is closed.
    - Willma @ the top of Portobello Road near Golborne is gone, but check out From Somewhere for fashions created from designer pieces in a previous life.
    - I generally disregard pricing in printed guides.
