    Lovely!

Although more simple, Changeling Sea does carry the same beauty of Mckillips other works. Ending this story was like waking from a dream (a feeling one becomes accustomed to after reading a few Mckillip books) in which the magic of the sea had the power to trap mortals. A dark and fairytale like story of magic black pearls, clever magicians and hexes, pearl castles and sea-monsters trapped by chains of gold, sea-bound princes and changeling sons, and a brave young woman who holds more power then she believes. Enjoy!

A Rare Gem....I would give it hundreds of stars (leaves) if I could

I did not set out to buy this book. I found it while searching a used bookstore for another of McKillip's books, and decided to purchace it anyways. I am so glad that I did. From the first page the book held me and kept me enthralled, taking me into a world of wise, ancient beasts, powerful female wizards, ancient texts and the wars of men. For sixteen years Sybel has lived on the mountain alone with her magical beasts, untill one night a young knight comes to her gate carrying a baby in his arms, asking her to keep it safe. Twelve years later the man is back and her life will change once again as she is sucked into the dangerous world of men and their games of hate, a world she swore she would not be a part of. This book is a wise, dark dream, exploring love and hate, power and what it is to know ones self. I don't know what else to say about this book except that it is one of my favorites, that the writing is lyrical and dream-like, and that above all, it is wise.

  • I would have loved this book when I was younger. It is a good look into the Canadian Metis way of life and the events that took place during the North West Resistance. First Nations tribes and their chiefs are also featured characters in this book, and so you get to learn a little (a very little) about them as well. The narrator was a likeable heroine. My favorite character was Josephine's grandfather Moushoom. The book was fairly realistic and I understand that many details were spared because this book is geared towards children. All in all very nice. Definatley recommended, especially for young readers interested in history. You won't be disappointed.
Also this book is sad, just a warning.

    A Rare Gem

Bright Star is beautiful and absolutley spellbinding. It tells the story of real-life poet John Keats and the tragic love he shared with his "Bright Star" Fanny Brawne. Truly a feast for the senses, Bright Star will intoxicate you with its lush imagery, wow you with its brilliant acting (the actors seem to live and breath their characters), and take you on an emotional rollacoaster untill you are left sobbing bitterly with Fanny (Abbie Cornish) as you wonder how fate could be so cruel. Words cannot describe the beauty of this film, it is simply breath-taking. PS: Possibly the best acting I've ever seen?

    Masterpeice.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is a hauntingly beautiful masterpeice. The story, the acting, its just....Amazing. I could say that it is a story of doomed, tragic love. Of betrayal and consequence. Of a longing for freedom so deep that it destroys. A film of exciting but graceful action scenes. But the truth is, its so much more than that, so much deeper.

    Sooo Cool!

Here's the jist of the movie; Clarence (an Elvis loving, comic book reading, kung-fu movie watching loser) and Alabama (who has been a call girl for exactly four days) fall hoplessly in love. But, of course, problems arrise and the two become entangled with some hardcore sicillian gangsters after accidentally stealing their coke.

Some of the characters are hilarious, like for example the pimp who thinks he's black or the stoner who has like four scenes but only gets off of the couch for one of them. And then theres Clarence and Alabama. This is truly one bad a$$ couple. Alabama is sweet and genuine as well as tough and brave, while Clarence is just, well, a bad a$$! This movie is silly in its improbability but so cool and, it really is truly romantic.

Beautiful. One of my favorite books.....

I have recently read Dangerous Angels by Francesca Lia Block and have since been in love with her writing. So unique and lyrical, dark and strange and just....beautiful. My favorite story in the book was 'Missing Angel Juan', Witch Baby's last book. Its about Wich Baby's journey in New York as she searches for her love, for Angel Juan. Now whether she finds him or not, I won't say, but she does discover the dark and dangerous city of New York, her phantom, slinkster cool granfather, and most importantly, she finds herself. I loved Block's descriptions of the cold city filled with darkness and magic, of Witch Baby's heartache and love for Angel Juan.

Along with Missing Angel Juan I also enjoyed Cherokee's story, 'Cherokee and the Goat Guys'. In this one, Cherokee, her boyfriend Raphael Jah-Love, and Witch Baby and Angel Juan start a band. With the help of Coyote and some gifts from the earth (the feather wings for Witch Baby, the Goat pants for Raphael...) they become a hit, but swept up into the life of drugs, alchohol and music, they soon learn that they are not ready for the power of these gifts and the fame it brought them. Francesca doesn't shy away from homosexuality, aids, sex and real life. Her writing is always sensual and real, but lyrical and magic at the same time. She makes me envy the characters who get to live in this slinkster cool, L.A. world. Who have Angel Juans and dance to reggae and hold powwows in their backyard. Who live "....in their silly-sand topped house in the land of skating hamburgers and flying toupees and Jah-Love blonde Indians".I highly recommend this book (Dangerous Angels). It is under the YA category (though Im not sure why) but is for adults too.

Lyrical and Dark, Lush and Haunting. Welcome to Jamaica.

The Story of the Night Women, of Lilith is one of darkness and magic, cruelty and strength. The imagery is lush; I could feel the heat that clings to your skin, the smell of the musky, island air, the spices of jamaica. The characters are all so human. And the writing! I felt as if I had sat down with my grandmother (who is jamaican)to hear one of her famous stories. Admitteldy at first, I didn't know what to think of the patois, but I soon forgot the strangeness of reading it and found myself thinking in patois! This story will grab you and even after you've read it, never let you go. For days I dreamt about Lilith. You think you know about black slavery? Well, take a trip back in time to Jamaica and find out all that our history text books failed to tell us. Its something I feel all should read, a story that I'll pass on to my children. So read it. Get lost in the history, the darkness, the magic of Jamaica. I promise you wont regret it.

PS: the patois is not hardcore and its very easy to understand and read.

This book was amazing. The author managed to blend her own creative genious with that of Romeo and Juliet, and Wuthering Heights. Blackman weavse and un-forgettable tale of love and hate as Callum and Sephy fight to stay together in a world where wrong is right.
