A book with a big heart.

Wonderful characters, heart wrenching at times to think of how difficult life was for blacks living as slaves in the 1700's. From the very first page you are drawn into the lives of Belle and Lavinia. The two narratives read beautifully, one into the other, seamlessly and not at all confusing. I did have trouble putting it down at times and wanted desperately for things to work out. Only a talented writer can make you feel so much for the characters, and Kathleen Grissom certainly was up for the task with this novel.

    Powerful and beautiful

From the very first pages, the women in this novel will touch you and inspire you with their strength, courage and faith. This novel sheds a whole new light on the events surrounding Masada by taking the reader into the lives and hearts of these women. The author has taken a historical event based on real women and woven one of the most beautiful novels i have read in a very long time.

    Could not finish it

Maybe I don't qualify for writing a review, but it is rare I cannot finish a book. I never connected with the people in this book and the writer did not give me a reason to care. Slow moving story and very depressing.

Beautiful and endearing from the very first page

Enjoyed this book thoroughly. If you are a mom, this book will touch your heart. The main character (it is written from the little boy's point of view) is one of the purest, funniest and most endearing literary voices I have read in a very long time. Once I finished the book, I missed him. That is always the sign of a very good book.

    pleasantly surprised

I picked this book up for $5.00 when I read the inside cover and was intrigued by the story line. It was a great read with likeable, believeable characters and the backdrop on India just added to the richness of the storyline. Much drama unfolds in the novel, more than is revealed in the synopsis. There are also more layers to the story than I would have thought upon reading the inside cover. I recommend this book, especially for the price.

Funny, raw & touching, but odd ending

I truly enjoyed this book and how easy it was to read. Real dialogue that made me laugh out loud on more than a few occasions. Great characters, superbly written and a truly original story. I will pass this one along to my older son, as I did with The Book Thief. Although I am still trying to figure out the ending, I highly recommend the book. I will definitely read his next novel.
***Personally I do not recommend this book to kids under 16 as there are many sexual situations.

    good but not great

Stuck with it and was glad I did, but not the best writing I have ever had the pleasure of reading. I enjoyed it but cannot quite understand what made it such an incredible best seller, considering it's length.

    The Gathering

Very difficult to get through. I found the writing stilted and sometimes difficult to follow. The characters were not empathetic whatsoever, so you never really cared what would happen in the end. Very disappointing.

    Enthralling read!

Immensely enjoyed this book. What a wonderful first book for Keith Donohue. Eloquent and rich vocabulary - a beautiful read. You feel for both the changelling and the stolen child. This author definitely has the touch and I hope it is the first of many novels.
