I loved this book. I learned a lot about the history of the Greeks in Turkey, but I also recognized the humanity, which trancends religious and ethnic differences.

I have read most of le Carre's work, but this novel was special because of the emphasis on the special bond between the British spy and his East European contact.

I have read several novels by Jose Saramago, but this one continues to be my favourite. I loved the strange main character and the odd world of records within which he works and lives. It is the story of the need to break out of routines in order to become oneself.

How To Be Good: A Novel

      Nick Hornby

Nick Hornby's strengths are humour and the creation of appealing narrators with authentic voices. In this novel Kate, a doctor, has always imagined that she is a good person, especially compared to her sarcastic, angry husband, David. But David surprises her by turning his life around after he meets Dr. Goodnews, and Kate surprises herself with her own actions and reactions.

I've also read The Time Traveler's Wife and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and really liked them both, especially the former. I love Nick Hornby too but haven't read How To Be Good yet so I'll put it on my list. Bel Canto rings a bell so I'll have to add it as well.
